One place you can’t afford to miss is the Oppstuhage memorial to Christian Eriksson near the museum. Eriksson designed the building as both living quarters and a studio. Among the artists who lived there from time to time were Maja and Gustaf Fjæstad, Björn Ahlgrensson and Fritz Lindström. Eriksson added on the Lilla ateljén (little studio) as his family grew larger.
Oppstuhage, which was dedicated as a memorial in 1951, has been restored to the same condition as when the Fjæstads lived there. Both the house and the little studio display casts and sketches for many of Eriksson’s works, including a number for which the originals are now in Kiruna Church. Forced to seek assignments in Stockholm, Eriksson didn’t live at Oppstuhage for very long. Nevertheless, he completed
several key works there, including “Konstforskning” (Study of Art), now on display on the right side of the National Museum of Fine Arts portico in Stockholm, and “Linné” (Linnaeus), a basrelief for which he was commissioned while still living in Paris.
